Scale-Dependent Point Selection Methods for Web Maps

Abstract In cartographic generalization, the selection is an often-used method to adjust information density in a map. This paper deals with methods for selecting point features specific scale numerical attributes, such as population, elevation, or visitors. With Label Grid approach and of Functional Importance, two existing approaches are described, which have not been published scientific literature so far. They explained illustrated chapter better understanding. Furthermore, new based on Discrete Isolation measure introduced. It combines spatial position attribute's value defined minimum distance nearest higher value. All described implemented made available Plugins named “Point algorithms” QGIS. Based this implementation, three compared regarding runtime, parameterization, legibility, generalization degree. Finally, recommendations given data use cases suitable. We see digital maps multiple scales main application those methods. The possibilities labeling selected points considered within scope work.
